The Winchcombe Way

Stage 4: Cleeve Hill to Winchcombe

Date: Monday 28 November 2011

If Stage 3 didn't quite match up to the variety and interest of Stage 2, it was not far behind. The trees were still clothed with their autumn tints, the air was mild and the sun occasionally broke through to illuminate the distant scenes across the vale and to the northern Cotswolds. After sorting out the cars the group started from Alderton: Lesley and Malcolm, Ann, Davids A and H, Terry and we welcomed back Mick and Marie from their holiday in Kenya and Ethiopia.

It was flat walking most of the way, through the Hobnails' Inn garden and car park, past the church and historic black and white houses of Alstone, before climbing gently along the side of Woolstone Hill before dropping down to Granna Lane on the edge of Gotherington. Here we paused for refreshments before tackling the very steep lane as it reached the summit of Nottingham Hill before enjoying a level walk in the emerging sunshine to our destination – Cleeve Hill Golf Clubhouse. Here we joined with countless other pensioner walkers to enjoy a well-earned meal and plan the next stage in a fortnight's time.

Our thanks to David Aldred for arranging this walk and for the text and photographs on this page.
