The Winchcombe Way
Stage 1: Winchcombe to Alderton
Date: Monday 17 October 2011
We had a good turn out for the inaugural stage of this autumn's long distance path – the Winchcombe Way – from Winchcombe to Alderton: Julia and Frank, Lesley and Malcolm, Derek, Terry, Richard and David A. The obligatory group photograph was taken by a passing pedestrian who obviously took pity on David's attempt to set up the delayed action on his camera!
From Winchcombe centre we climbed up Langley Hill enjoying the view back over the town to the far hills. Then it was all downhill to Gretton, on Terry's home patch, for a refreshment break at the bench on the little green, where we were joined by Graham. Passing under the railway bridge we were stopped for a chat by Julie Hayes who refused all encouragements to join us! From there it was flat walking to Alderton, where we remarked on the great variety of house styles and materials, before reaching the Gardeners' Arms where the specials' board provided excellent meals at very reasonable prices. The pleasure was enhanced by the company of David H who joined us for lunch. We hope for more of the same when we return there for our next stage on 31 October.
Our thanks to David Aldred for arranging this walk and for the text and photographs on this page.
