The Gloucestershire Way
Stage 11: Huntley to Steam Mills (Cinderford)
Lesley, Malcolm, Richard, Margaret W., David H. and Terry met at St Oswald's on Wednesday 25 March and caught the bus to Huntley. The walk started with a long steady climb through a wood which was a testing start after the previous flat sections of the Glos.Way also we had to combat a strong breeze. After a slight drop into Ganders Green a long climb to the top of May Hill followed, the fantastic views from the top making it worthwhile particularly towards the Severn horse shoe. Dropping down to Longhope we contemplated a stop at the pub but decided it was about an hour too early, after a flat section we started to climb again and after a very steep section we lunched at the top of Pool Hill. During lunch a small rain shower passed over and after about twenty minutes we started towards Abenhall, this section was down hill but soon to be followed by a climb up the side of Plump Hill. On reaching the top we then continued at a brisk walk through woodland ,drooping down towards Steam Mills hoping to catch the 2.20pm bus. Unfortunately this was missed, 100yards from the road we saw it pass. Not to be dismayed rather than hang about for an hour we walked a mile into Cinderford to catch another bus back to Gloucester. The general feeling was this had been a strenuous but enjoyable walk.
